A Letter to Sugar

by Erika Lynne Jones

I am breaking up with you

You are toxic for me, now I see

I am done with you

You seem so sweet, but you always bring harm to me

I am keeping my distance from you

Too close and I behave just like an addict would

I am over you

Your track record with me is no good

I crave you

Only when my other needs aren’t being met

I replace you

And before long your sweetness I forget

I resist you

Just to make more room for your comeback

I dance with you

Only for you to sneak in your overnight sack

I bow to you

Your power over me has been so great

I release you

You are free, so leave and take all this extra weight

I don’t need you

I know my patterns and with you it’s all just lies

I’m better without you

Physically, emotionally, spiritually, I’m simply more wise

I live without you

Longer, stronger, greater, braver with you in my past

I thrive without you

Joy, clarity, energy and peace are mine again at last.
